Month end is always a challenge for me at at work. Doubly so when I am preparing for a 17 day absence, so I took myself off to club today with a lot of stress to run off.
Rather than a long slow run, I chose to run with Elaine and Christa who were both really supportive through my VLM training (Christa ran it too – a lot faster than me!) and are quicker than me. They’ve both, like me, had a few easy weeks, so we opted for a 2.5m run with a long downhill/uphill section, a mini tempo run if you like. I really enjoyed it and ran farther up the hill than I thought I could – I concentrated on landing on the front of my feet and repeated my mantra – light, soft, easy…
When I got home though, I still didn’t quite feel like me. I was a bit grouchy and uptight, so I decided to do a quick sprint round the block. It took my mileage up to 3.1m in 33 mins ACES!! But then I got home, and STILL didn’t feel like I’d got rid of it all, so I swapped my trainers for me lovely new Merrell barefoots and went for a 30 minute walk. NOW I feel like me again!
Talking of which- here’s a bit of shoe porn for you all.
They weigh just 157g each – mentally light!! When I first picked them up my arm flew up in the air – I just wasn’t expecting it. I weighed the Asics that are my normal shoes – 373g per shoe, which makes the Merrells less than half the weight. Tonight was my first outing in them. It took me precisely 7m 40s to feel comfortable walking in them (I know because I looked at my watch). I have a funny walk- it’s often been pointed out to me that I walk as if I’m on a tightrope, placing one foot directly in front of the other and flicking my feet out (most recently by Sue whilst I was showing her my achilles injury). Again I had to concentrate really hard to make sure I walked normally (who knew running and walking involved so much THINKING!) but by the end of the 30 minutes I think I had almost cracked it.
Is it too soon to tell them I love them?
